Wayne Wilson MIOM is now a Planning Manager for Hansatech EMS, having benefitted from support from Aspire. This is his story…
I am 39 years old and have been working within manufacturing for the last 21 years. I have over 10 years’ experience within a planning role. From 2005 to 2010, I was working for SPI Lasers, a local manufacturing company based in Southampton, as a materials/production planner. My role consisted of ensuring the smooth flow of materials into and through the organisation. I was primarily brought in to install and configure the company’s material requirements planning (MRP) system and act as an interface in the transition from engineering to manufacturing, as well as setting up part numbers and creating bills of materials (BOM). I was also responsible for managing the forecast and MRP that drives demand for material throughout the business.

I wished to pursue the APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) certification programme; my intention was to develop my knowledge of supply chain management further and thus lead on to greater career opportunities. Due to financial constraints, neither my employer nor I were in a position to fund the certification programme fully, so, as a member, I contacted the Institute of Operations Management (IOM) for advice.
It was shortly after the launch of Aspire, the CILT Careers Foundation, and because the IOM is a membership body within CILT, its members are eligible to apply for Aspire funding. I applied and was accepted on to the CSCP certification programme. I recently left SPI lasers and took on the role of Planner Manager at an electronics manufacturing company based in Poole, Dorset. This was the career opportunity I had been looking for and I believe the CSCP certification contributed to me standing out from other candidates and resulted in me being offered the position.
Thanks to the Institute and Aspire, I now have the confidence and the opportunity to broaden my understanding and experience within other areas of supply chain and logistics management and finally achieve my aspirations. I would strongly recommend this course to anyone who is either in or wishing to progress into management within the supply chain sector. The knowledge gained will provide an excellent insight into supply chain operations.
