West Berkshire Training Consortium – Web site
Aspire, has forged a new partnership with the West Berkshire Training Consortium (WBTC) in 2013 to bring foundational logistics skills to young people.
The Newbury-based Consortium is a charity that helps school and college leavers to progress into Apprenticeships through coaching and training. It offers qualifications in areas such as English, Maths, Health & Safety and First Aid that are quick to complete and provide young people with confidence to apply for work placements and Apprenticeships with local employers. By adding the Reach truck training to its portfolio, WBTC has been able to broaden its range of practical workplace skills and open up more opportunities in the local job market
Matt Garvey, Managing Director of WBTC said: “We have had fantastic feedback from all those who have taken the Reach forklift truck licence so far. The practical skills sit well with our other areas of training and our trainer, Stuart has great rapport with the students. When the young people come to us, they are often lacking in self-belief and need support to prepare them for taking their first steps in the workplace. Logistics is a flourishing sector and we are seeing a growth in local employment opportunities, so the partnership with Aspire has enabled us to give young people skills that are relevant and sought after – so much so that, this year, one in seven of our learners is now Aspire-funded! Through our work, I am hoping to encourage more local employers to take on young people directly instead of always relying on agencies.”
Aspire has continued to support WBTC through funding for learners on their forklift courses. There have been 25 learners complete the forklift course in 2014/5 with 5 of them completing both Reach and Counterbalance training.
The learners really enjoy this opportunity and the following feedback has been received – “Really enjoy it, they can’t speak highly enough of Stewart (the trainer) and he is very effective at getting them through the course. They have a lot of fun as well”
There have been a couple of learners who have progressed into apprenticeships/jobs in that area.
Aspire have also now supported WBTC with the gift of a number of CILT(UK) Level 1 Award in Logistics and Transport.
The CILT(UK) Level 1 Award in Logistics and Transport has been designed to offer an entry-level overview and an insight into the logistics and transport profession. It introduces learners to basic logistics concepts and also to transport and distribution in the logistics sector. The qualification will cover the importance of being able to use different forms of written communication, and help learners develop the skills to draw information from a variety of documents and equip them for progression to other CILT(UK) qualifications
